Unix has been popular in India since its early days of computerization.Linux is a natural progression. Most of them find Linux a better version of Unix. This also brings in a pool of talent that is already familiar with Unix that can pick up Linux very quickly.
But what is the position of Linux popularity in India among the other countries in the world? To try to answer the questions, we have looked at data from Google with the highly useful Insights for Search, which gave us a number of interesting and often surprising results.
Determining the popularity
Using the google tool we can find at where a specific search term is most popular, If a high proportion of the searches in a country are for the term “Linux”, this should also indicate that Linux is popular in that country, or at least that there is a high interest in Linux.
Global Linux popularity
On a global level, the interest in Linux seems to be the strongest in India, Cuba and Russia, followed by the Czech Republic and Indonesia (and Bangladesh, which has the same regional interest level as Indonesia).
India is in the top means the Indians are searching most on Linux. But if we use the same method for determining the popularity of different Linux distributions globally India is not a top of any of the common distributions.Which means Indians are not specific to a particular distribution and using all the distributions equally.
Linux popularity in India
In Inida, interest appears significantly stronger in Assam and Kertataka than the rest of the country.Karnataka’s high position is understandable, considering it is the Silicon Valley of India , but I am not sure why the interest for Linux is even higher in Assam.
