Resolution Issue in Ubuntu 8 with NVIDIA After Installing the Driver

July 26th, 2008 Posted in Ubuntu

I have installed the Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron in my system with built in  NVIDIA GeForce 6100 graphics. I could install the OS without much effort for configuring any sound or graphics. But when I installed the  NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver from the proprietary driver manager for 3D support after restarting the system it is having some problem with the resolution. It is taking the resolution only below  640×400 and cant change it into higher resolutions.

I have fixed this problem by adding the resolution options under the section screen in xorg, config file. I have edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf  file and changed the screen section into the following and restarted the xserver.

Section “Screen”
Identifier “Default Screen”
Monitor “Configured Monitor”
Device “Configured Video Device”
Defaultdepth 24
SubSection “Display”
Depth 1
Modes “1024×768″ “800×600″ “640×480″
EndSubSection
SubSection “Display”
Depth 4
Modes “1024×768″ “800×600″ “640×480″
EndSubSection
SubSection “Display”
Depth 8
Modes “1024×768″ “800×600″ “640×480″
EndSubSection
SubSection “Display”
Depth 15
Modes “1024×768″ “800×600″ “640×480″
EndSubSection
SubSection “Display”
Depth 16
Modes “1024×768″ “800×600″ “640×480″
EndSubSection
SubSection “Display”
Depth 24
Modes “1024×768″ “800×600″ “640×480″

Google Calculator

June 29th, 2008 Posted in Web 2.0

Google is a great search engine, but it’s also more than that. Google has tons of hidden features, some of which are quite fun and most of which are extremely useful.Google Calculator is on of the most used hidden feature of Google search. You can use Google as a high-tech web-based calculator and tries to understand the problem you are attempting to solve without requiring you to use special syntax.

Google’s calculator isn’t limited to basic addition and multiplication. It can also handle more advanced calculations, trigonometric functions, inverse trigonometric functions, hyperbolic functions, and logarithmic functions. Just enter the proper formula into the search box, and wait for Google to display the answer. You can also ask many other questions thats having a unique answer.Let’s see details about each of these.

Basic Arithmetic

Operator Function Example
+,-,*,/ Basic 3+44,13-7,89*10,10/10
^ exponentiation (raise to a power of) 8^2
% modulo (finds the remainder after division) 8%7
choose X choose Y determines the number of ways of choosing a set of Y elements from a set of X elements 18 choose 4
th root of calculates the nth root of a number 5th root of 32
% of X % of Y computes X percent of Y 20% of 150

Advanced Math

Operator Function Example
sin, cos, tan, sec, csc, cot, etc. Trigonometric functions (in radians) cos(pi/6) , cosine(pi/6)
arcsin, arccos, sinh, cosh, tanh etc. Inverse trigonometric and parabolic functions arccos(.5) ] , cosh(6)
In,log,lg,exp,! Logarithm,Exponential,Factorial functions lg(16),6!

Units of Measure and Conversions

Type of Units Examples
Currency Australian Dollars (AUD), British pounds (GBP), Euros, US Dollars (USD)
Mass kilogram or kg, grams or g, grains, pounds or lbs, carats, stones, tons, tonnes
Length meters or m, miles, feet, Angstroms, cubits, furlongs
Volume gallons, liters or l, bushels, teaspoons, pints
Area square kilometers, acres, hectares
Time days, seconds or s, centuries, sidereal years, fortnights
Electricity volts, amps, ohms, henrys
Energy Calories, British thermal units (BTU), joules, ergs, foot-pounds
Power watt, kilowatts, horsepower or hp
Information bits, bytes, kbytes, etc.
Quantity dozen, baker’s dozen, percent, gross, great gross, score, googol
Numbering systems decimal, hexadecimal or hex, octal, binary, roman numerals, etc. Prefix hexadecimal numbers with 0x, octal numbers with 0o and binary numbers with 0b. For example: 0×7f + 0b10010101.

Ubuntu and My 3D Desktop

June 25th, 2008 Posted in Open Source

For a normal windows user the first attraction towards the ubuntu is truly the Compiz fusion 3d desktop. In my experience when one user saw the Compiz fusion animations in the window manager he at once needed  the CD or  wanted to install ubuntu in his mechine. But unfortunatly he can install the ubuntu but will not be able to configure his graphics for the Compiz fusion or advanced desktop effects. But the Proprietary driver manager packed with ubuntu will make it easy to install the graphic drivers and hence a normal user can enable the advanced desktop effects without much effort.

I am using Ubuntu in my home and also in my office for the last 1.5 years and almost forget about the windows  and its ctr+alt+del  nature. That is I can use the Ubuntu for all of my needs with a feeling of stable platform with a huge amount free utilites for all of my needs with its automatic updates.

In my Office I have A Dell Vostro 200 machine. I have installed Ubuntu and configured its graphics and sound successfully .It is using ATI Accelerated graphics driver installed from the proprietary driver manager. The Compiz fusion advanced desktop effect is working very smooth and also giving me a different feeling than that of the old window managers.

The name Shameer

June 25th, 2008 Posted in Our World

I have heard about that the meaning of my name “Shameer” as  “Energetic”.I have searched a lot in the web to find out the meaning of this word “Shameer” but unfortunatily I couldn’t  find any such name in the list of muslim/arabic names. The boy’s name Shameer is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is “flint” and it is a variant of Shamir a legendary material that can cut stone. Solomon used it in the building of the Temple.Shamir is a very rare male first name and an uncommon surname. Sameer meaning “wind” is a similar name to Shameer  and its a common name in India.

In Kerala Shameer is a very common name especially in  Kozhikode and Malappuram Districts. When I was in Dubai for a three month assignment  from the company am working I had met another Shameer a nice guy from Kozhikode.  He explained me how common the name in his place as he already has a number of friends with the same name Shameer!

But the most funniest thing in the name is in my office we have two Shameer(s) me and our production manager Shameer  and hence a lot of problems with the names. Some times I will get some of his mails and also guys will ping me by mistake and will start to chat serous matters. Then my identity in my office gradually chaged to MShameer as they shortent my full name Mohammed Shameer.
